HAPPY NEW YEAR ! and 2008 Resolutions

Have you made any NewYears Resolutions? There is something magical for me to start new and fresh with resolutions on January 1. I usually stick to the basics like everyone else - I've just expanded a bit more here and there this year.

and here I go again....

Spend more time on hobbies and reading.

Try a new bead stitch every month

Complete at least 1 jewelry piece every week. Put new items on Etsy shop.

Take more pictures.

Reach / maintain weight my goal weight through exercise and portion control

Clean out old magazines

Cut back on unnecessary spending. Don’t buy it unless I absolutely need or love it.

Use up everything at home before shopping again. Clean up pantry first before refilling. Find recipes that use current ingredients.

Send e-cards to extended family instead of snail mail.

Daily
Take more pictures, at least 1/day. Print the good ones.
Work out at least 5 x’s / week
Keep house clean and organized - follow Fly Lady
Track spending
Try a daily journal.

Sunday’s –
Organize coupons, keep in car, use often.
Using 1 recipe book / week, plan weekly menu.

New Year coming, new changes, new look

I'm going for a calmer look for 2008. I'm actually going to try a few more changes just don't have time today. This setup is backwards from what I'm used to, not sure if it's comfortable for me yet. I feel a bit left-handed with it. good goal - keep trying new things. I'm working on a big resolutions list, then I'll pare it down. Trying to keep it fun and do-able.

Reading Challenge for 2008 = What's in a Name?

I've joined my first reading challenge for next year at Annie's What's in a Name? and this is my selected reading list for the 2008 Challenge.
I've decided to read the classics where ever I could fit them in. In any classics I've read in the past, I haven't been disappointed so I'm looking forward to reading these choices. that said, I do have backup's on some selections just in case my first choices don't work for me. These book titles may be familiar to you, but I have not read one of them. I often thought about them, but didn't take the time to pick them up. this challenge is perfect for these books.

1. A color in the title -- A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Doyle or Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne
2. An animal in the title -- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
3. A first name in the title -- Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe or My Antonia by Willa Cather
4. A place in the title -- The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and Nevill Coghill or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
5. A weather event in the title -- The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Ernest Hemingway
6. A plant in the title -- Basil by Wilkie Collins
(I don't have a backup for these last two yet for this, hope I can find them at the library and I find them entertaining enough to finish reading.)

warming up

We went to Smokey Bones for ribs the other night. Very good! There's my daughter on the left and sis with hubby and son on the right.

It's supposed to warm up this weekend so all our pretty snow will melt away. I like seeing the snow. It's a fun change of scenery.

good news/bad news I've been put on a 'special assignment' at work. It will start 1/7/08. I will be moved to another team to help them complete a project. We have 3 months to get an application up to speed. My C++ expertise has been the cause of this. There are a small number of C++ programmers left in the company I work for. Everyone is now Java or .Net. I've moved to more Java programming myself but I still have that dying expertise that is needed. Bad news is that I've become more cemented into my new team and it will feel like my umbilical cord is cut when I have to leave them. All ties to my team are cut as of 1/7 and I have to be totally 'dedicated' to the project for 3 full months. I will miss them dearly.

Nope, not my kitty. but it sure is cute. Maybe Santa will bring me a kitty.

My precious daughter is home for the holidays. She went from Phoenix to Chicago, her Chicago to Cleveland flight was cancelled so I convinced the reservations agent to re-route her anyway they could to get her out of Chicago since their weather was a mess and getting messier. So they put her on a flight to LaGuardia so she could catch a flight to Cleveland there. WELLLLLL, what a time I had. The flight left the gate in Chicago and sat and got de-iced and sat and waited. By the time the flight took off they would arrive in LaGuardia 30 minutes after the flight to Cleveland was scheduled to leave.
**Here is where the power of positive thinking proves positive. I started lighting candles and for each and every wick I lighted I said "the flight in LaGuardia WILL wait for Ann" I had to wait until the scheduled take off time for the Cleveland flight and then SUDDENLY... didn't that flight get delayed 1 hr 15 min.!!! enough time for Ann to get in, switch concourses and get to that gate. PHEW. turns out the delay in LaGuardia to Cleveland was not for weather but some slight mechanical problem that suddenly occurred :) amazing. by the time Ann showed up, the mechancal problem was fixed and off they went. It was very important for her to get home last night so she could go see the Cleveland Browns play live at the stadium. turns out she and her friends had to sit in a blizzard, but they had a blast anyway.

Feeling Green

OH! how I envy all those bloggers that can keep it together. All my fav's that I blog hop to. They make it look so easy to keep blogging everyday. I'm exhausted these last weeks just trying to catch up to the Holidays. How do they do it? I've even stopped trying to make decent dinners. Thank goodness G likes soup with crackers and cheese. I completed my quilted wall hangings for family gifts and just finished up the picture calendars for family gifts too. I've got two packages ready to go out the door. One less thing to think about. phew. I keep telling myself = keep moving, keep moving. what do you have to do next ? plan, do it, plan, do it.... Daughter Anne is coming home this weekend for a two week visit. I want so badly to have all the shopping and wrapping completed so we can cook and bake and play together. Work keeps getting in the way. How does everyone else take 9 hrs out of their day for work, 8 hrs for sleep, 3 hrs for morning routines, the commute and dinner. what's left ? 4 hrs? even less usually. it sounds like a lot of time, but it goes sooooo fast. I've got photo's that are a week old that I just don't have time to upload. I'm exhausted and going to bed. How do those wonderful bloggers make it look so easy. I'm green with envy. At least I'm color coded for the season. Phew, it sure felt good to let off that bit of steam. good night all.

City lights

G had flowers waiting for me when I got home from work yesterday. What a sweetie he is!!

We finished decorating inside. Now I'm working on completing the Christmas gifts I'm making. Some quilted wall hangings and Calendars with family photos.

Every year this house lights up the neighborhood. There is even a Mr and Mrs. Clause (life size statues) standing on their porch

just keep hopping

I've been blog hopping for days. I'm enjoying it so much, I decided to stop by my own blog and mention some new ones I've found. Here's JOE, who loves food and loves to cook and does a much better job at it than myself. and..Take a look at BellaDia who has a fun site for crafters. There are so many more I've found. I may even share more tomorrow. have a wonderful evening. I'm off to the quilting table.

visits

I have been having sooo much fun blog-hopping I haven't spent any time on my own blog. I promise to upload more quilting pictures. My quilted wall hanging project is coming along nicely. I've also been created an etsy page for my jewelry. setting pages up takes a long time for me. so many choices, so many options. I get so overwhelmed.

quilting and puters

Still working on my quilt and still trying to figure out the easiest way to get photos uploaded. Got my old desktop working so now I have to puter's. that crazy ol' Mercury retrograde really had me going this time. It held over for a bit longer than I expected. Then, sure enought, everything started working again. and now I have a new laptop to love and care for.

Saturday, November 17, 2007

I didn't know quilting was so task intensive. First I had to pick out what I wanted to do - talk about overwhelming decisions. there are so many fun and pretty choices out there. next I had to pick out colors - then go get the fabrics! choices, choices. then wash and iron all the fabrics. don't forget matching thread. next - I picked a wall hanging to make that had appliques on it soooo I had to get some plastic to trace my appliques onto. then cut out the appliques

next trace your templates onto fusible web - then cut them all out. 4 big trees, 8 little trees, 6 stars.

I feel like I'm cutting my paper doll clothes again.

I'll be working on it again this evening so I'll display further adventures tomorrow.

For my macrobiotics, I cooked up lentils with carrots, onions and sea vegetables. At the end, I added a bit of Mirin and tamari. It's very good, but only for those that can handle the taste of seaweed. fortunately, I LIKE IT.

Vista --- ick

so far Vista has not made a very good impression with me. I can't use my MICROSOFT Picture It! 2001 - won't run it. I can't listen to .wav sound bites on websites - vista has so much internal security, it won't let me play them before I download them. I could go on but I'll just make myself more pissed. well, I'm going to take my old worn out PC into the GEEK squad and see if they can get the old gal up and running. maybe I'll just have two computers until enough people complain to microsoft so they fix a few of their 'issues'. I refuse to let anyone control me by keeping me angry. it's not that important.
A laptop is not a desktop, I'll just learn to love my laptop for what it is.

On to happier adventures tomorrow. good night world.

arrival

My new laptop arrived today! It's beautiful. there sure is a lot of work getting a new pc up and running. I copied a bunch of music and pictures over. got some registrations completed. learned what was loaded on it and what isn't. My favorite picture publishing software isn't available from Microsoft anymore. I used Picture It! Publishing on my old PC and Vista can't run it. I'll have to find a good program that will handle all the functions I like to use when I play with my photos.

here is the snowman potholder I made. It's a bit primitive like I said earlier, but it's a start and it was fun. Shabby chic is in right?

a twist on breakfast

I'm very excited. I got my sewing machine out yesterday and did a warm up exercise. I made a snowman potholder. I added my beads for the eyes, nose, mouth and coal buttons. It was a lot of fun but it's easy to see I need a lot more practice. but who needs perfection. I've got the pattern picked out for my first attempt at quilting. Next on my list is to go pick out my fabrics. That will be fun. I love fiber and fabric as much as I love beads.

If you like oatmeal, whole oat groats are better for you. Old fashioned oats, even steel cut oats are still considered too processed for macrobiotic cooking. Yesterday I cooked brown rice, wheat berries and rye together and baked a butternut squash. I warmed up the grain mixture with 1/4 of the squash for breakfast. It was really yummy.

Chew on this

I went to an Intro to Macrobiotics class last night. I'm so very interested in eating for health. The foods used just happen to be my favorites so it's easy for me to move toward a more macrobiotic diet. Grains, beans, legumes and veggies, veggies and more veggies. The one thing the instructor really stressed was CHEW your FOOD. He said chewing 50 - 100 times for each mouthful is optimal.

Food should be liquified in your mouth using the gastric juices created by your saliva before you swallow. I think of how often I have chewed 4 - 5 times and swallow. He says we get much more nutrients out of the food we eat if we allow the mouth to do it's job. So I tried it this morning. It took a long time to eat my Rice-n-Rye w/ butternut squash for breakfast. but I feed I'm doing my body good. chew, chew, chew.

blustery

I saw snow falling today outside my office window. It only lasted for 5 min. but it's a start of a long cold season. Tomorrow, more of the same... cold, rain/snow and blustery. Everytime I hear the word blustery I think of Winnie the Pooh! and his umbrella turning inside out because it was such a blustery day.

I made chilli in my new pressure cooker - added my already cooked beans to it and ended up with burned beans on the bottom of the pot. The recipe had said to add the beans after the cooking process was complete and just heat them through, but I somehow missed that part while I was throwing everything in the pot.

Too many jalepeno chunks almost made it un-edible it was so hot. So I added a little brown sugar to cover up the burned bean taste (pathetic) and let it sit for a day in the fridge. the flavors mellowed out as I hoped they would and found it very tasty after all. G kept telling me to just throw it out, but I can't throw out food - just because it was a little burned - I just couldn't do it.

expecting

I've ordered my new laptop ! I'm expecting a delivery - should take 2 weeks to show up ! I ordered an HP dv9500z. I tortured myself over which one to buy, so if you don't like HP or this model, PLEASE don't tell me. I'm looking forward to my new arrival and don't want any negative energy surrounding it.

I used my pressure cooker today and made black beans. I love black beans and rice. I throw some Tamari sauce and Franks hot sauce on them. yum! I'm thinking of making chilli tomorrow night with my fresh cooked beans. double yum.

I brought my jewelry to a craft fair on Saturday. It was a very small craft fair. I went because my neighbor did not want to go alone and asked if I would bring my stuff and share her table. She does watercolor cards and pictures. Anyway, I picked up an extra $50 that way. fun money.

Once I get my Holiday jewelry ready and set up at the shop, I'm going to start my learn-to-quilt projects. I'm looking forward to a new challenge.

Happy Halloween

We only get about a dozen kids, but it sure is fun to see them dressed up. I wore my witches hat of course, while we passed out candy. While waiting I made some pumpkin-oatmeal cookies. I'll top some with cream cheese frosting and some with chocolate. yummy.
Happy Samhain to all my blessed friends out there.

the grind

fooey, it's back to work! what a great day off I had. didn't get my cookies made, maybe tonight. but it was a laid back, relaxing, just do what I want day. I bought myself a pressure cooker - wow - you say. a kitchen utensil for your birthday. well, I've been wanting one and it was a good excuse to finally spend the money on myself.

Happy Birthday!

It's my birthday, it's my birthday. 53 and loving it! well, I'd rather go back to 40 and start from there, but I'll take 53, it's a very fun age. I took the day off work to celebrate and do my favorite things. Today I would like to.....
play with my beads
bake cookies
try to sew a small quilted potholder (don't know how to quilt) it's a kit.
go to the library
go to lunch with my sister AND have dessert!
sit by the fire tonight with G
go for a walk and take some pics of the beautiful changing of the trees

That will be a good day. I'm very excitied about it.

As I start my 54th year, I've decided to learn how to quilt. I think quilt work is absolutely beautiful. I'd like to expand my beadwork into quilting projects. It would be a fun blend. I'm getting books from the library. I'd take an evening class on it, but I haven't found one yet.

I've also decided to buy that laptop. This PC isn't working well, it's over 6 yrs old - time for a replacement.

MOLEY

HOLEY MOLEY!!! I may have fixed my wireless connection on my PC! I'm connected obviously, but I don't know how long this will last. I may have just saved myself $1,500!!! wow, what will I do with all that extra money --- a cruise perhaps. I'll just keep my PC on all day and see if I can stay connected to the big 3W. Hello World!
Still connected - well actually - I've been disconnected twice but managed to 'repair' my connection. something very spooky is going on I actually have to keep the setup page for the router open. If I close it I get disconnected. Hey, whatever works I can live with it.

If it's not one thing - it's another

ooooo that Mercury Retrograde. got me again! My computer is down - I think my ethernet cable card has gone bad. I've tried everything else I could think of and I still can't get an internet connection from my PC. So while G is sleeping, I'm using his PC to do some blogging before work. I've decided to buy a laptop this time around. My PC is 6 yrs old and it's time for an upgrade. It's got a lot of outdated hardware on it - I'm still trying to talk myself into spending the money on new equipment when I probably can fix it with a new network card. I work hard.... I spend a lot of time in the winter playing on it.... ok I win. I'm going to start researching for a laptop. If anyone out there has recommendations on a good, worth the money, laptop, pllllleeease let me know. I know one thing for sure. I'm not buying anything computer related until after 11/1 when Mercury goes direct.

Now it's time for my favorite thing - blog hopping to visit my fav's.

Sunday, October 21, 2007

I'm ALIVE! and I'm back. I've missed my blog friends. Even when I wasn't blogging I'd still sneak a quick minute when I could to swing by a blog or two to see how my fav's were doing. October here in Cleveland has been very pleasant and keeping me outdoors longer than I expected. I've been running almost 5x/week with my sis. We have a bet to lose 10 lbs in 10 weeks finishing up on Thanksgiving day. We're halfway there and I'm down 5 lbs. It's hard work! it's so easy to put 10 on, how can it be so hard to take 10 off !! The bet is $50 so everytime I feel the need for a sweet treat I have to decide if it's worth $50 or not. usually NOT. I'm going to win! then I'll spend my $50 on candy and cakes and bread! ha. not really. I like this feeling of fitness and vitality I'm feeling from eating better and exercising more. I must have a lot of endorphins floating around 'cause I'm feelin' good.

Here in Cleveland, I've got to say GOOOOO TRIBE !!! good luck tonight boys !!

Sunday, August 05, 2007

I've been doing very well on my vegetarian/vegan wanna be diet. I've lost 3 lbs! No meat - no junk food (big part of it) no wine, no beer, no bread (big one - I miss this. I'll add whole wheat bread after I lose a few more lbs) I had a couple bites of birthday cake at work (not mine) because I didn't want to be the party pooper so the white flour snuck in. I ran out of soy milk creamer and had to use fat free milk for a couple of days. But I've been eating a LOT of veggies, rice and beans - no hardship these are my favs.
Plus I've been exercising 45 min = 5 days this week. Hiking and biking.

Breakfast sample : oatmeal w/ cinammon and blueberries
Lunch sample : vegetable soup
Dinner sample : whole wheat past w/ beans and zucchini
Dinner sample : zucchin frittata sans eggs

2 and a half MONTHS!

I needed to step away from the computer. I didn't realize I would be gone so long. I've been enjoying the warm weather and playing in my flower, herb and veggie gardens. They're small but cute and I love my plants. When I sit down at the computer I lose track of time. I get swallowed up in a vaccuum, a black hole. Hours later I surface and realize I've lost hours of good weather. I still want to stay in touch, but for the summer, my blogging might be only on weekends or rainy days. Today is a rainy day so before I start cleaning I thought I'd catch up.

My family went to the Outer Banks - Nags Head, NC the second week in July. We rented a beach house on the ocean. The view was excellent, every morning the dolphins would swim past. The pelicans would give us an air show just as good as the blue angels. Living in a house for a week with 12 other members of your close family can get very uncomfortable if a few people don't get along. To put it mildly, my sister-in-law does not like me. She did everything she could to keep me uncomfortable. I have vowed to not spend another week in a house with my brother and his wife. My brother was great - he did his best to ignore her moodiness and keep peace with me. Enough of wasting my time on her. For the rest I had a blast with my sister, one more aside - for everything we did for the first few days, we invited my sister in law to join us - she would turn her head away and refuse. So we proceeded to have fun without her - which really pissed her off. We built huge sandcastles, took long walks along the beach, romped in the ocean and played games with the kids. I envy the families that don't have to deal with rudeness while enjoying a week at the beach, it could have been so much more relaxing. By the time I got home, my face was broken out from stress. I super-imposed our pics in there just for fun.

I've been contemplating becoming a vegan and I'm going to try it for one month starting today. No meat - no dairy - no white flour. I'll get plenty of protein from tofu, soy and protein powder (in my fruit smoothies) and I'll take a B12 supp every day. It will be tough for G because he loves meat. We can always through a steak on the grill for him so he shouldn't have to suffer too much.
It's time to go sit with the birds on the patio and smell the morning air and my coffee. Hope your all having a wonderful summer.
