Joining the 21st Century

Hurray, I feel like I finally joined the 21st Century.
The cable guy showed up yesterday and installed a digital cable box to our TV AND now we have DVR !!!!  yay.

I don't even watch that much TV, but when I do and there is nothing decent to watch it's very frustrating, so I'm going to set some shows up to record for when that happens.
One show I plan on recording is GLEE.  I've heard good things about that.  There was another show that's supposed to be real funny, but I can't remember the name of it or when it's on.  ---  this is why I don't watch much TV, I don't know when the good shows are on.  duh.

Oh well, new techy things are always fun to get, even if I don't know what to do with them.  LOL!

Happy Spring

Spring has made it back!  The days are warming up.  my crocus's are blooming!

I can hear cardinals, wrens and robins chirping as I wake up at 6:00 am.  I actually smile at 6 am just listening to their good morning songs.

I am convinced that is my favorite part of spring - hearing those lovely bird trills come through my closed window in the tree outside my bedroom window every morning.  By the time the  weather warms up and we open the windows at night - the bird eggs have hatched and all the baby birds are very loud in the morning crying for breakfast.

And the third sign of spring around my home is this prophetic bud.
The Forsythia bush.  I love it's bright yellow color, I can't wait for the blooms.

I am still working through Denise's Daily Dozen book, I just found I was saying the same thing everyday - all that complaining about how hard the exercises were and her meal plan is great.  I don't ever feel hungry enough to cheat - that being said....

On St. Patty's day I did have a couple light beers and the following day my friend was in from California so we went to dinner and enjoyed a martini together.  I don't think it hurt much in the grand scheme of things.  :)

Here is my daughter and her roommate at the end of St. Patty's day, still smiling, very tired.

Denise's Daily Dozen - Day 8

I've been following the Daily Dozen plan for one full week now and I've lost 2 lbs !
In one week!  yay!
That is great motivation for me.   I did my workout again tonight but didn't get any walking in today.

This week is busy for me.  After work, I've got my knitters club on Tuesday and meeting friends for St. Patty's day Wednesday.  I'm going to have to slip my workouts in there somehow, plus walking!

The last thing I want to do is regain those 2 pounds I just worked really hard to get rid of.

Spring starts this Saturday, March 20.  Warm weather and short sleeves will be here soon.  I figure I have about 8 more weeks to get the jiggle out of my arms.  YIKES.

Yes, this is FORBIDDEN!!!

Denise's Daily Dozen - Day 7

Day 7 already.
I have G following along with the menu plan since that's all I'm cooking lately.
So far he is enjoying all the food just as much as me.  What we like is it's normal everyday food tastefully put together and the recipes are easy to follow.

Now, her exercises, are kick butt.  For me at least.  I still find some that I just can't complete, but I keep trying.  Tomorrow is my first week completed weigh in.
We'll see how well this works.

I have to admit to a couple cheats.  Friday night we went out and I had one beer.  On Saturday, we went out for dinner, I had the required shrimp and salad that was scheduled for the day, but I had a couple pretzel sticks while waiting in the bar for our table.  Not too terrible, but not on the plan either.

I don't think either of those two cheats will put me over the edge.

Denise's Daily Dozen - Day 4

I made the mistake of doing a slow 2.5 mile jog before my daily dozen workout.
It made the workout so much HARDER since I was already tired.
I managed to do all the workouts except one.  Well, I couldn't complete the pushups.
Pushups are HARD!  I could only complete the first set.

But again the food was plenty and very good.  This is the first meal plan in a diet book that I actually like and can actually follow.

We hit 70 F today.  It was so pretty I opened the windows and finally got fresh air into the house.  I can't wait for summer.  The good weather gives me even more motivation to keep moving.

Denise's Daily Dozen - Days 2 & 3

my muscles are aching today! I walked a mile for a warm up today.  Feeling full of energy, I did some extra workouts yesterday for Day 2 using hand weights and doing extra lunges.  I could barely walk down the stairs this morning -- I am so sore.   So I am definitely working muscles that I forgot I owned.

Today, Day 3, I walked for 1/2 hr - I figure that's 2 miles since I'm not a real fast walker.  Denise wants us to walk 12 miles / week, so I've got 5 miles done so far.
With aching muscles I struggled through today's Cardio blast - it's a kickboxing routine and kicked my butt.  I like these aerobic routines better than the muscles workouts - I guess that's because my muscles are soooo weak, as demonstrated by my total soreness today.

I miss my glass of wine but Denise says to give up alcohol for the first week - at the very least.
I made myself reminder bracelets so I remember to drink 8 glasses of water/day.  I made 4 stretchy bracelets of white seed beads and they start out on my right hand.  Every time I drink 8 oz of water one bracelet is moved to my left hand.  When I have all 4 bracelets on my left hand I start moving them back to the right hand.
When all 4 are back on the right hand, I know I drank 8 glass of water!
GENIUS!

The weather is warming up - we nearly hit 60 F today and the snow is melting fast.
Hopefully it will stay warm this weekend and I can get out for a slow jog.  I'm looking forward to being out in the sun again.

Denis's Daily Dozen - Day 1 - Sunny

Here we go...
thank goodness today was sunny and warmer than usual.
I made it outside for a slow 2 mile jog - took about 30 min. so it was a real slow jog, but I got the job done.
Once I got home I was warmed up so I did the required 12 exercises - they were a small challenge but I was able to complete them all. YAY.

Denise's food plan is great.  I'm not starving between meals - some days we'll get a fruit snack between meals .

So I've weighed in and measured myself - we're off to a good start.
I hope I stick with it for 3 weeks.  It sounds like a long time to be very very good.

Daily dozen - Day Minus 2 : Jump Start

It was bright and sunny today and much warmer than we've had for a long time, so I stepped outside and took a long walk.  60 minutes in the afternoon sun was a good calorie burn and gave me a good dose of vitamin D.

I'm hoping after doing Denise's workout for awhile that they'll start to get easier.  I still can't complete them all - I try them all, just can't finish them.  Wow, did I let myself get out of shape.  Shame on me!!!

The meals are excellent.  I look forward to trying each new menu.
Can't wait till next weekend to see how much I've lost.  Since I officially start the Daily Dozen book on Monday, I won't check the scale until next weekend.

A Beautiful Start to the Weekend

There was a package from Australia waiting for me on my doorstep when I got home from work yesterday.
Carol over at Barnacle Goose Paperworks sent me a gorgeous handmade journal that I won in the One World One Heart Magic Carpet Ride.
Carol from Australia is currently visiting New Zealand and will have some fun photo's when she gets back.

The binding is beautiful and it's filled with plenty of creamy paper.  This is one journal that won't be forgotten on a bookshelf.
I plan on filling it with my jewelry drawings/designs and cutouts from my favorite mags of anything that makes me happy from home deco to clothes to jewelry to inspirational words - a scrapbook of happy.

This morning I received a Sunshine Award from Sandra at A Cappuccino A Day who is traveling through Italy and showing photo's along the way.
Thank you Sandra, I am pleased and honored to accept this Sunshine award and be added to the wonderful group of positive bloggers.

Daily dozen - Day Minus 3 : Jump Start

Denise had me working hard and sweating through the 12 exercises again today!
She calls it a cardio blast but it was a full muscle burn for me.

One thing I've noticed.  I used to make the easiest meal possible and think it must be less calories and better for me.  I'm following Denise's meal plan and recipes and she makes the meals delicious so I don't feel deprived and I'm finding that I'm not craving things I shouldn't have because the meals are so satisfying.  why didn't I think of that before.  it makes so much sense.

I don't have a need to overeat because my mouth and stomach are satisfied.
what a concept.

also walked for 30 min today - approx 2 miles.

Daily dozen - Day Minus 4 : Jump Start

I'm starting to work my way through Denise Austin's Daily dozen, her plan actually starts us out on a Monday and since I'm ready to start and it's Thursday, the book says if we want to start before Monday, then when Monday rolls around start at Day 1, Week 1 and redo the days you've done.  get it, got it.

The workout for Thursday, week 1, targets upper body and abs.
I couldn't finish them all in the 12 minutes planned out.  I used my kitchen timer which can be used to count up.  All the workouts are hard, but you only have to do each one for 1 min or less, most are 30 seconds.
Sounds easy ?  it's not.  by the time I finished all the exercises I was soaked in sweat !!
Some exercises I couldn't even start, some I couldn't complete.  It was a hard workout!

I also walked for 30 minutes today to get some cardio in.

Following the food plan Denise suggests will be easy.  the food plan for today was good and filling.  the recipes easy to follow.  there is plenty of food.  I had 3 fruits, lots of veggies and enough protein.   the only thing missing was my glass of wine with dinner.  (maybe on the weekend)  :)

My Book Arrived !!!

Back in early February I won a book from The Book Chick.  That book is Denise Austin's new book "Denise's Daily Dozen - the easy way to lose 12 lbs in 2 weeks".
here's what I said back then....
When I placed my comment entry to try to win, I said I would     follow the book and blog about the daily process every day for      the 2 weeks to try to lose 12 lbs.  That means that if Denise has     anything to do with it, I am going to be doing a LOT of exercising for 2 weeks ! lol.

Well my book arrived today and I'm going to start off right away tomorrow.  I am totally committed to make this work.  I've read through the book.  Denise has organized it so it's easy to understand and easy to follow.  The menu's are very do-able and the exercises look challenges and again do-able.  She has it set up so we can't fail unless we don't pay attention.

I'll blog about my challenges and accomplishments every night.  I'm so excited to see what changes I'll see when the plan is over.

It would be great if you wanted to follow along with me.  It's actually a 3 week plan but I'm committed to follow every detail Denise spells out.

Favorite Food Site

I love food so much, I find even just looking at pictures of food is satisfying.
If you have never been to Food Gawker, click on the link and take a look at what people are cooking and baking.  It's one of my 'go-to' sites at least once a week.

The photos make EVERYTHING look good.  I am so envious - I would love to be able to make my food look this good when I'm ready to eat it.

Auto Show Picks

The Auto show is going on this week and we spent a few hours there this weekend.
I came up with a few favorites.  I was surprised to see how many auto makers are coming out with bolder colors this year.
Bright banana yellow is HOT this year.  It was included in about 75% of the big car companies.
Here are my favs...  I couldn't tell you what kind of car each one is, I just go for color and style.  :)    first one of course matched my jacket !!!

then I just love this picture - it's a headlight - turned ON

and finally, I don't know what this has to do with auto shows, but a wonderful Italian bakery was set up and selling the MOST beautifully looking pastries I've seen since I've been to Italy.
I would have taken more pictues of the patries, but someone questioned me right away so I only got a picture of the Lady fingers:
